Biography

Dennis Rex ‘Barney’, son of Rex and Dorothy (Veak) Brower, was born September 23, 1948 in Red Oak, Iowa. He lived with his family in Red Oak and attended school there. At the age of 10 years, the family moved to Carroll. Barney graduated from Carroll High School in 1966. He then worked at Lange’s Dairy for a couple of years before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Coral Sea for 16 months working on munitions. He volunteered to go in-country during the Vietnam War and was stationed near Saigon.
On June 16, 1970 Barney was united in marriage with Patricia Bohnenkamp at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Carroll where he and Pat raised their six children. Barney worked at L. A. Smith Company, the City of Carroll and in construction before starting his own trucking business in 1975. Barney drove all over the United States and made many friends in the trucking business. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Carroll and the Disabled American Veterans.
Barney enjoyed fishing, reading and movies. He was a history buff, especially information about the Old West. His golden retriever, Gunnar, was a faithful companion for 14 years. Having coffee with his friends and spending time with his family were of the utmost importance to him.
While trucking in Indiana, Barney became ill and stopped at a VA Hospital there. After several transfers and treatments and seven weeks in hospitals, he was able to come to Carroll. Barney died at home surrounded by family early Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the age of 62 years.
