As a child he was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. After completing his education, David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1974. He was stationed at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.
On May 28, 1976, David was united in marriage with Patricia Olson. Two daughters were born to this union. After his honorable discharge in 1976, the family made their home in Denison where he worked for Boyer Valley Construction.
