Avis Laverne, daughter of William and Ella Avis (Shull) Roche, was born January 2, 1915, in Early, Iowa. After her graduation from Sulphur Springs High School, near Nemaha, IA, Avis earned her teaching certificate at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake. She earned her bachelors degree at Mankato State University in Minnesota while her children were growing up and in later years she was awarded a Masters Degree in Education from Mankato State. Avis was a devoted elementary school teacher.      On June 16, 1939, Avis was united in marriage with Loren Reid at the Methodist church in Nemaha, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. They lived in Coon Rapids, Pocahontas and Vinton where in each of these places Avis taught school. In 1962 the family moved to Glencoe, MN, where Avis taught nearby and continued to live after her retirement. After the death of her husband, Avis moved to Des Moines in 1985 and then in 2000 moved to the retirement community of John Knox Village in Lees Summit, Missouri.           Avis was a former active member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines, and was a member of P.E.O. for over fifty years. She was a finalist for Teacher of the Year in Minnesota and also a Delta Kappa Gamma Woman of the Year.      Avis was a world traveler, a gifted artist and an author of education-related books. She loved flower gardening, family genealogy and photography, but her greatest love was for her family.     During the past year, Avis moved to Assisted Living at John Knox Village and then Special Care as her health continued to deteriorate. She died on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, at Lees Summit Hospital at the age of 92 years and 22 days.           Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; and two brothers Cecil F. Roche and William S. Roche.     Avis is survived by her four children: Reita and husband Tom Hutton of Manitowish, WI; Carol and husband Gary Anderson of Overland Park, KS; David Reid and wife Mary of Leawood, KS; and Tom Reid and wife Jonna of Huron, SD; nine grandchildren: Shawn Munos; Reid Hutton; Matt Anderson and wife Nancy; Tim Anderson and wife Kristi; Sarah and husband Jason Elder; Erin Reid; Ryan Reid; Rory Reid and Chase Reid; eleven great-grandchildren; sister Miriam Dokken of Grand Island NE; sister-in-law Joyce Roche of Galt, CA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
