Duane Owen, son of Carl and Gertrude (Raygor) Hoffman, was born January 14, 1926, at Coon Rapids, Iowa. He attended Coon Rapids High School and was active in band, choir, basketball and baseball. Following graduation in 1944, Duane served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge, Duane returned to Iowa and worked as a truck driver for Johnson & Watrous Trucking, Buckingham Company and Fienberg Distributors as well as other trucking companies. During his more than 50 years of driving, Duane received many Safe Driving? awards. In October of 1959, Duane was united in marriage with Carolyn E. Hansen. Two children were born to this union. The couple made their home in Perry. Carolyn died in March of 1963. Duane then lived in Rippey and Waukee before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1974. In 1979, Duane was united in marriage with Maureen Erickson at Minneapolis. After this marriage ended in divorce in 1984, Duane returned to Iowa and lived in Manning for a short time before settling in Coon Rapids in 1996. Duane was a member of the International Order Of Odd Fellows. He was an avid reader of westerns and spy books. He loved watching television and never missed Wheel of Fortune or a James Bond movie. Duane enjoyed taking drives around the countryside and often visited Sparkys in Bayard for a sandwich and soda. On Wednesday, March 15, 2006, Duane died at his home in Coon Rapids, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. He was 80 years, 2 months and 1 day of age. Duane was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn; father Carl Hoffman; mother Gertrude Raygor Hoffman Hall and husband Harley Hall; grandmother Tressa Scheffers; uncle Raymond Raygor; aunt and uncle Dora and Bernice McLaughlin; a cousin Roberta Raygor Dillinger; sisters-in-law Elanor Hansen Watts and Charlotte Hansen Kinney; and brother-in-law Dick Hansen. He is survived by a daughter Debby Hoffman of Coon Rapids and her special friend Denny Kommes of Exira; a son Dale Hoffman of Sioux City; a grandson Keith Hoffman-Meyer of Council Bluffs; cousins: Doug and Mary Lou Raygor of Owatonna, MN; Joan and Ronnie Van Sickle of Estherville; Carol Raygor and Keith Raygor of Colorado Springs, CO: sisters-in-law: Rosie Bylund and Violet and husband Darrell Archie Anderson both of Audubon; Anna and husband Hayden England of Omaha, NE; Marilyn Hansen of Manning; a brother-in-law Dale Hansen and wife Lorraine of Alden; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
