Alice Irene, daughter of John W. and Mary Ann (McElwaine) Lohmeier, was born April 26, 1907, on a farm south of Manning in Carroll County, Iowa. Later she moved with her family to a farm west of Manning. Alice attended rural grade school and then graduated from Manning High School in 1924 and was the last living member of her class. In high school Alice took Normal Training. While waiting for her 18th birthday when she would be awarded her teaching certificate she worked as a clerk in Rober-Wehrmann Department Store in Manning. After her teaching certificate arrived she was hired to teach Rural School District #6 west of Manning in Crawford County. On October 27, 1926, Alice was united in marriage with Fred W. Grau. Two children were born to this union. Fred and Alice farmed the Grau Family Farm eight miles north of Manning for 42 years. They retired in 1969 and moved into Manning. Fred died on September 24, 1979 and Alice remained in their home on Center Street. Alice was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Ladies Guild. She served as Washington Township school secretary and was a member of Farm Bureau Womens Auxiliary. She was a past president of Womens Division of Carroll County Extension and Rural Homemakers Club. In 1966 she was honored at the annual Rural Homemakers Leadership Recognition Day in Omaha, NE. In her spare time, Alice enjoyed fishing, gardening and sewing. When Alices health began to fail, she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in January of 1997. She died there on Monday, February 13, 2006, at the age of 98 years, 9 months and 18 days. Preceding Alice in death are her parents; husband; a grandchild, in infancy; three brothers Henry Lohmeier, John Lohmeier, Ray Lohmeier and sister Lizzie Joens. She is survived by her daughter Marilyn and husband Merlin Rostermundt of Ireton and son Dr. Craig R. Grau and wife Leslie of Verona, WI; five grandchildren: Travis Grau, Thea Grau, Monica and Wilbert Verros, Mona Lewis and Matt Rostermundt and wife Annie; seven great-grandchildren: Jeremy, Jason, and Brandon Verros; Jessica Christensen; McKenzie Draayer and Nick and Zalina Rostermundt; and eight great-great-grandchildren; sister Arlene Musfeldt of Manning; other relatives and friends.
