Ann Ewoldt

September 2, 1927 — January 9, 2012

Dolores Ann, daughter of Leslie and Phyllis (Lasker) Coats was born September 2, 1927 in Kansas City, KS. She attended Argentine High School where she made many life-long friends. Ann attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA for one year, majoring in music. After college, Ann moved to San Francisco, CA and worked for Pacific Island Engineers in the historic Ferry Building where she met her first husband, Billy G. Ranes. Two children were born this union, Terri and Randall. Ann and Billy moved back to Kansas City in 1952 so they could be close to Ann's parents. Ann was a member of RLDS Church. After Billy's death in November of 1953 she worked as a runway model for Charles A. Black at Adler and Harzfeld's Department Stores. In 1959 Ann was united in marriage with Kenneth Ewoldt and moved to his home in Manilla, IA. Two daughters were born to his union, Phyllis and Paula. Ann loved to sing and dance. She owned beautiful gowns and was always attending dance contests in Kansas City. In Iowa, she and Ken made quite a qood-looking couple on many dance floors. Ann was often soloist for the Manilla Presbyterian Church and sang at many funerals. She enjoyed following her children's many school and sport activities and became a Cub Scout Den Mother and 4-H Leader. The latter would always make her laugh as she claimed she "couldn't sew a stitch if my life depended on it". She may not have been able to sew but she was a wonderful cook, a talent she passed on to her four children. She also loved to read, play cards and trips to casinos, continuing in those activities until she was unable to do so late in life. Ann loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and traveled often to their homes spreading from California to New York. She developed quite an appreciation for fine wine and enjoyed visiting wineries during her trips to California. She took many trips to Kansas City, spending time with her daughter and family there and connecting with her friends from high school. Ann struggled with arthritis most of her adult life. In November of 2008, when she could no longer remain at home, she became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. She died there on Monday, January 9, 2012, at the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 7 days. Ann was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Laurel Peterman. She is survived by her husband of 52 years Kenneth Ewoldt of Manilla; daughter Terri and her husband Gregg Gimlin of Leawood, KS; son Randall Ranes and wife Nancy of Bakersfield, CA; daughter Phyllis Drake of Jefferson, IA; daughter Paula and husband Richard Burgin of Rochester, NY; 7 grandchildren: Jennifer, Nick, Will, Anna, Cathy, Brenda, and Michael; 4 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
