Arlene Kathryn, daughter of Edward and Kathryn (Bluml) Schlichte, was born November 24, 1923, at home on a farm north of Templeton, Iowa. When she was six years old her mother died. A couple of years later her father married Regina Langel, who was like a mother to her. She attended Sacred Heart School in Templeton through the eighth grade. She then worked at home on the farm. She and her dog helped round up the milk cows so she could do the milking.

On June 11, 1945, Arlene was united in marriage with Raymond Engelen at Templeton. They were the parents of five children. Raymond and Arlene lived on a farm near Glidden where Arlene was a home maker. After the death of her husband on November 5, 1960, Arlene and her children moved back to Templeton.

On April 4, 1970, Arlene was united in marriage with Alfred Wittrock. They made their home in Templeton where Arlene operated “Arlene’s Ceramics and Crafts”. Alfred died December 19, 1994 in Texas.

Arlene moved to Manilla after her marriage to Joseph Schiltz on December 7, 1996. Arlene was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas for over 40 years. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Church and Altar Society in Manilla. She enjoyed being a member of the Helping Hand Club and has always enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends.

When Arlene’s health began to fail and she could no longer live alone, she became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. She died there on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 16 days.

Arlene is preceded in death by her parents; step mother Regina (Langel) Schlichte; three husbands; sister Vernell Schmitz and two brothers Orval and Robert (Ardella) Schlichte.

She is survived by her five children: Dr. Daryl Engelen and wife Sherry of Des Moines; Randy Engelen of Templeton; Karen and husband John Cosgrove of Austin, MN; Gary Engelen and wife Patricia of Templeton; and Doyle Engelen and wife Jane of Templeton; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; step-children Lois and husband Larry Walker of Omaha, NE; Lorraine and husband Fred Marasco of Omaha, NE; Bill Schiltz and wife Vonnie of Schleswig; Bob Schiltz of Manning; Glenn Schiltz and wife Diane of Denison; Tim Schiltz and wife Monica of Manilla; Richard Schiltz and wife Martha of Durham, NC; Ray Schiltz and wife Teena of Janesville, WI and Alan Schiltz of Lidderdale; sister Della and husband Virgil Lappe of Glidden; brother Dale Schlichte and wife Theresa of Manning; sister in law Mary Ann Schlichte of Wisconsin; brother in law Robert Schmitz of Carroll; numerous other relatives and friends.
