Arlo Howard, son of Julius and Ella (Goettsch) Dammann was born September 4, 1930 in Aspinwall, Iowa. At the age of 3, Arlo’s family moved to the present family farm south of Manning. Arlo attended country school near his home and graduated from Manning High School in 1948. Shortly thereafter, Arlo’s father passed away, and Arlo continued to operate the family farm.

On June 7, 1953, Arlo was united in marriage with Betty Jane Obman in Arcadia. Three children were born to this union. Betty and Arlo farmed south of Manning until they semi-retired and moved into Manning in 1988. Arlo continued to spend time at the farm. He loved the land and was kind to it. In 2009 Arlo received the Century Farm award while attending the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.

Arlo was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He and Betty traveled to Las Vegas, California, Kentucky, the Grand Canyon, and other destinations. After Betty died in 2004, Arlo continued to enjoy attending special occasions for his grandchildren, having coffee with friends, and having special visits with Joy Umland.

In January of 2018, Arlo’s health began to decline and he spent one day at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning before passing away there on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 17 days.

Besides his parents, Arlo was preceded in death by his wife; son-in-law Randy Chalfant; sister Viola Behrens and husband Harold; sister-in-law Ruth Liechti and husband Mac; and brother-in-law Floyd Leiting.

Arlo is survived by three children: Gary Dammann of Manning; Colleen Chalfant of Guthrie Center; Wes Dammann and wife Joyce of Manning; five granddaughters: Stephanie Ayala and husband Hugo of Brea, California; Sara Blockhus and husband Randy of Altoona; Jacquie Odelson and husband Josh of Western Springs, Illinois; Erin Willis and husband Wes of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Alyssa Dammann and fiancé Nicholas Lemanski of Farmington Hills, Michigan; five great-grandchildren: Lauren Ayala, Ben & Jacob Odelson, and Ty & Payton Willis; sister-in-law Helen Leiting of Arcadia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
