Barbara Jean, daughter and eldest child of Andrew D and Marjorie (Gessman) Carothers, was born January 6, 1936 at home in Manilla. She attended Manilla Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1954. While in school she fell in love with music, participating in choir, marching band and concert band. Barb became a wonderful piano and organ player, an activity she continued all her life. After graduation Barb worked at the Crawford County Bank in Denison.
On June 19, 1955 Barb was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart Charles Agan at the Presbyterian Church in Manilla. While her husband served in the United States Air Force Barb continued to work in the bank in Denison. After the birth of their two sons Barb became a full time homemaker caring for her sons, babysitting other children and giving music lessons. She continued to share her gift of music by teaching piano and continuing to babysit for many years after her sons were grown.
Barb was a very strong Christian and always shared His word every chance she could. She was a member and the choir director and organist for the Manilla United Methodist Church until her health declined. She also served as secretary at the church for 14 years. Barb has been a member of the Manilla American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. Above all she adored her family and was proud of her sons and their families.
When Barb’s health continued to decline she entered the Manning Regional Healthcare Center where she died several days later on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. She was 80 years, 4 months and 25 days of age.
Preceding her in death are her parents and sister Lois Dorfler.
Barb is survived by her loving husband Charles Agan of Manilla; sons Jeff Agan (Shelly) of Manilla and Brad Agan (Christy) of Breda; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren Justin Agan (Emilie) and their children Blake and Grant of Breda and Jennifer Agan and fiancé Cameron Custer of Steam Boat Springs, CO; sister Lorraine Riley (Jim) of Springfield, MO; brother Robert Carothers (Bev) of Goodyear, AZ; brothers in law John Dorfler of Ricketts and Richard Agan (Cheri) of Anoka, MO; sister in law Becky Agan of Osage Beach, MO; other relatives and many friends.
