Billy Elmo, son of Frank and Dolly (Day) Young, was born October 27, 1925, at Edina, Missouri. He grew up in rural Missouri and attended country schools near his home. Following his schooling, Billy farmed with his father. In the final years of World War II, Billy enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served as a gunner on a destroyer. Upon receiving his discharge, he returned to Missouri and drove truck with his brother Ralph. Billy then attended electrical school in Chicago, Illinois, before returning to work with his brother once again. It was during his training in Chicago that Billy met Nadine Teter. Billy and Nadine were united in marriage on December 3, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1951 they returned to Nadines hometown of Coon Rapids, Iowa, where they farmed her family farm until poor health forced Billy to retire in 2005. Farming was Billys life. He enjoyed raising cattle. Billy was a 50-year member of the American Legion and served as a Union Township Trustee. On Tuesday, October 31, 2006, Billy died at Dallas County Hospital in Perry, Iowa.
