Catherine (Kathy) S. Kalkhoff

March 8, 1939 — March 5, 2020

Catherine, daughter of Edward and Catherine (Kirsch) Daniel, was born March 8, 1939, at Dedham, Iowa. She grew up in the Dedham and Roselle area, where she attended school and helped neighboring families with child care. Kathy was also employed at the Burke Inn in Carroll as a waitress.

On June 28, 1958, Catherine was united in marriage with Edwin Gerhardt Kalkhoff at the Holy Angels Church in Roselle.  Five children were born to this union.  Kathy and Eddie lived in Templeton until 1959 when they moved to the family farm south of Templeton.  Kathy worked side by side with Eddie on the farm and was also a wonderful stay-at-home mom. After retiring, they moved into Manning in 2010. Eddie passed away on April 9, 2018.

Eddie and Kathy were members of the Sacred Heart Church in Templeton and then in Manning. She was a member of the Catholic Guild in Templeton and the Manning Altar Society.   She was also a member of the Manning Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered at the hospital snack bar where her grandchildren enjoyed helping her “work”.  Kathy always had a big vegetable garden and a green thumb when it came to her beautiful flowers. She enjoyed every moment spent with her family.  From the huge Christmas gatherings, the piñata at Easter, and just the general one on one of their visits.  Kathy and Eddie enjoyed spending their spare time together golfing, bowling, and going to the casino. Kathy’s children remember her as always being there for them in every aspect of their lives.

Following a brief illness, Kathy passed away at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Thursday, March 5, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. She was 80 years, 11 months and 26 days of age.

Kathy was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Kalkhoff; her parents, a brother Andrew (Elvera) Daniel; a brother-in-law John Eich; a sister-in-law Betty (Earl) Kerkhoff; and a grandson-in-law Ben Obrecht.

Kathy is survived by her children: Barb (Jim) Niehaus of Arcadia; Joe (Jackie) Kalkhoff of Manning; Laura (Alan) Fara of Manning; Dan (Margaret) Kalkhoff of Ansley, NE; Pat Vonnahme of Templeton; 16 grandchildren: Sarah (Jeremy) Smith, Robin (Rick) Lawler, Jeffrey (Teren) Oliver, Jaime (Kayode) Fajingbesi, Jacob (Trista) Kalkhoff, Jordan Kalkhoff, Christin (Casey) Aldridge, Nate (Keely) Fara, Nick (Courtney) Fara, Summer (Steve) Heath, Cody (Melissa) Kalkhoff, Josh (Paige) Kalkhoff, Brandon Kalkhoff, Michelle Vonnahme, Amber (Jake) Schechinger, and Matt (Ashley)Vonnahme; 32 great-grandchildren with 1 more to arrive this summer; sisters: Arlene (Robert) Wittrock of Mount Carmel and Ann (Robert) Lenz of Carroll; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
