Charles Sandquist

September 30, 1919 — June 1, 2015

Charles Leonard, son of Peter and Bessie (Nearly) Sandquist, was born September 30, 1919 in Tilden, Nebraska. He was the second of seven children, growing up and attending school in Tilden. He graduated from Tilden High School then went to Kearney State College for one year, receiving a certificate in engineering. In 1942, Charles entered the United States Army. He completed Airplane Engine School, B-17 School and Aerial Gunnery School. The latter months of his WW II enlistment he served in the European Theater of Operations, including the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Charles's plane was shot down and he received a Purple Heart before being honorably discharged in 1945. After the war he returned to Tilden and was united in marriage with Wilma Lorraine Stewart. They lived in Newman Grove, NE where their daughter was born. The family then moved to Denver where his wife died in 1969 after heart surgery, Charles worked for Gates Rubber Company, retiring after 23 years. Charles remained in Denver and on May 28, 1983 was united in marriage with Lucille Anne Gute. They moved to Carroll, Lucille's hometown in 1992. Charles was a very active man, enjoying hunting, fishing, carpentry, boating and gardening. In addition to his love of any outdoor activity he liked to talk and tell stories. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9014 and American Legion Maurice Dunn Post 7. In July of 2014 Charles broke his hip while cutting down a tree. Even though his health was failing, he continued to cause mischief' according to his family. Later that month he became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. He died there on Monday, June 1, 2015 at the age of 95 years, 8 months and two days. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife Wilma (Stewart) Sandquist; siblings Wesley Sandquist, Evelyn Bustos, Dorothy Handcock, Doris Shelton, and Lenora Proehl. He is survived by his wife Lucille (Gute) Sandquist of Carroll, IA; daughter Cheryl Sandquist of Denver, CO; granddaughter Christi Heinrich (Andrew) of Denver; two great-grandchildren Alex and Ariel Heinrich of Denver; brother Fred Sandquist (Joanne) of Oakdale, NE; Lucille's family: Alvin Gute of Solon, IA; Marilyn Schram of Gretna, NE; Larry Gute of Carroll; Juanita Bruno (Joe) of Marseilles, IL; Vernon Gute (Linda) of Modale, IA; Dennis Gute (Ann) of Carroll; Eugene Gute of Afton, IA; Arlene Brooks of Haines, AK; nieces, nephews and friends.
