Curtis Struve

February 6, 1952 — December 2, 2018

Curtis Glen, son of Glen and Lois (Boldt) Struve, was born February 6, 1952, in Carroll and was raised on the family farm three miles east of Manning. In 1970 Curt graduated from Manning High School where he lettered in football, basketball, track, and baseball. From 1970 to 1972, he attended Wayne State on a basketball scholarship. Curt worked as a carpenter with Dick McConnell, Ray Dentlinger, and Herman Sonksen in Early from 1969 to 1975 when he returned home to work with his father.

On January 14, 1978, Curt was united in marriage with Dr. Rexanne Miller at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Three children were born to this union. Curt raised cattle, corn, beans and hay as a fourth-generation farmer on the family farm east of Manning. Curt’s carpentry experience, along with the assistance of Dick McConnell and Ray Dentlinger, allowed him to design and build the family log home, the new Struve SPF Lab, Rexanne’s Veterinary Clinic, Manning Heritage Hausbarn Restaurant and Conference Center, as well as restore the old sale barn, many of the farm’s outbuildings, and Jaime’s store. He had a photographic memory and could fix anything.

Curt was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as trustee and congregation president. He was also an Ewoldt Township Trustee and a member of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association and the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing in Canada and Alaska, camping, sports, traveling and visiting former foreign exchange students. Curt was generous with his time and talent. Above all, he loved and cherished his family with a comforting presence and gentle strength. Known by his grandchildren as “Papa,” Curt will forever be missed.

On Sunday, December 2, 2018, Curt passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while doing chores on the family farm near Manning. He was 66 years of age.

Curt is survived by his wife Dr. Rexanne Struve of Manning; a son Chad Struve and wife Ann of Iowa City; two daughters: Jaime England and husband Ben of Manning and Brandi Wiig and husband Jarred of Irwin; seven grandchildren: Abram, Alice, Bode, Cash, Graham, Hadley and Jessa; two sisters: Linda Bromert and husband Tom of Glendale, Arizona and Rhonda Roberson of North Carolina; a brother Kevin Struve of Manning; an aunt LeeAnn Musfeldt of Manning; an uncle David Boldt and wife Jane of Anita; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Cory, and a nephew Jason Bromert.
