He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1968. Darrell then attended junior college before enrolling in Northwest Missouri State at Maryville, MO. Two children, Matt and Angie, were born to this union. They lived in Des Moines where Darrell worked for Squealer Feeds and a plating company. At one time, Darrell was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was registered with NPIP and was a member of the American Shetland Pony Club. He enjoyed spending time with his faithful dog Zip.
