Darrell was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church near Kimballton and started high school in Audubon. He and Dale took off a year of school to work on the family farm, while their brother Arne was in the U.S. Navy. They returned to school and graduated in 1949.

After boot camp at San Diego, California, he was assigned to Camp Pendleton and worked in Administration for two years, receiving his honorable discharge in 1954. He then returned to Iowa and farmed northeast of Elk Horn for 35 years. In 1989, he and Lenore moved into Elk Horn. In 2018, they made their home at Heritage House in Atlantic.

Darrell was a member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church. He was a lifetime member of the AmVets #51 and a member of Elk Horn’s American Legion Post. He served on the ASCS County Committee in Audubon County for 25 years and Danish Mutual Insurance Board for 16 years. He also served on the FmHA County Committee in Audubon County and on the Elk Horn Lutheran Council.
