Daryl Lester, son of Lester and Irene (Meggers) Genzen, was born August 16, 1935, at Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Daryl attended rural schools through the eighth grade and then graduated from Manning High School in 1953. On July 13, 1958, Daryl was united in marriage with Diane Dalgety at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Three children were born to this union. Daryl was drafted into the United States Army in 1958. Prior to his honorable discharge in 1960, he served nineteen months in Germany. Daryl worked for ten years at the Manning Creamery, then began working at the Thrifty Food grocery store in Manning. In 1977 he became a partner in the store with Blackberry Vollstedt, Ronnie Hiatt and Curt Long. Daryl retired in 1997. He kept busy driving the Senior Center van delivering meals to local residents until his health caused him to stop. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, as well as the American Legion and V.F.W. posts. Daryl volunteered on the Manning Fire Department and served as treasurer. He was also a lifetime member of Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein. Daryl's greatest joy during the last year of his life was being a Great Grandpa to Levi and Riley.
