Daryle Betts

August 22, 1927 — January 6, 2014

Daryle Channing, the oldest child of Willard and Vogal (Umbaugh) Betts, was born August 22, 1927 at their rural Bayard home. Daryle attended country schools prior to graduating from Coon Rapids High School in 1945. Immediately after graduation he was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served his country for two years. He was stationed in Korea and was a company clerk. After his honorable discharge Daryle returned to Coon Rapids and met the love of his life Ferne Hartwigsen of Glidden. On December 12, 1948, Daryle and Ferne were united in marriage. Two children were born to this union that lasted over 65 years. Daryle farmed and raised livestock and sold seed corn for many years. He then purchased and operated Betts Standard Station in Bayard for over 30 years. When his health began to fail he closed the station in 2006. Daryle loved to sit and shoot the breeze' with anyone who was available to listen. He loved giving pop and candy to children who came to the station with their dads. He also loved to drive the countryside picking up pop cans with Ferne. In later years he and Ferne attended Congregate Meals in Coon Rapids so he could see his many friends and visit some more. Daryle had been in failing health and was able to remain at home with the help of hospice and his family who surrounded him at the time of his peaceful death on Monday, January 6, 2014.He was 86 years of age. Preceding him in death are his parents and parents in law; brothers Billie Dean Betts and Estel Betta; sisters in law Carol Betts and Ardel Betts; in laws Roy and Evenlyn Hartwigsen and Harold and Eunice Bonney.
