David Van Scoyk

January 18, 1948 — October 6, 2012

David Le, son of LeRoy and JoAnn (Davis) Van Scoyk, was born January 18, 1948 in Denver, CO. He moved with his family to Arizona where he attended school and graduated from San Manuel High School in 1965. After graduation, he enlisted in the United State Navy. He was stationed in Kingsville, TX where he was an airframes mechanic. During this time he met and married Reta French in 1967. One son was born to this union. After his honorable discharge David enlisted again. He was united in marriage with Caryll Shanon Swager. They were the parents of three children. David was served as a hydraulic specialist on the aircraft carrier USS Samuel Gumpers. The family lived in several communities before settling in Manilla, Iowa in 1980. He also helped raise her two children. In 1986 David was united in marriage with Loretta Baltzer Case. They continued to live in Manilla. During his life, David worked in repairing and building semi truck trailers; as a parts man for auto and truck parts retail store and as a mechanic for both autos and trucks. Eventually, his hobby of woodworking became his full time business. He restored and repaired furniture and made custom frames. In addition David was a musician, playing blues guitar and singing in several bands over the years, including the rock and roll band Junkin'. David was baptized as an adult at the Methodist Church in Defiance. He was a member of the American Legion. During his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping and was an avid reader. He had a very special knack for entertaining and reading to his grandchildren. Over the years, David was plagued with a number of health problems and in 1992 his health really started to decline. By September of 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he died on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan. He was 64 years, 8 months and 18 days of age.
