Dennis Moran

April 3, 1944 — August 6, 2015

Dennis John, son of John and Cletus (McCaskey) Moran, was born April 3, 1944 in Boone, Iowa. He and his family lived in Ogden, and he graduated from Ogden High School in 1963. By this time he acquired his lifelong nickname of Red' (in later years was known as the Silver Fox'.) Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving stateside until his honorable discharge in 1970. On April 11, 1966, Red was united in marriage to Elta Summerson of Dawson, and together they brought three beautiful children into the world. After living in Jefferson for a short time, they moved to Bayard, where Red worked as an electric service mechanic and substation inspector for Alliant Energy (formerly Iowa Electric). He retired in 2006, dedicating over 30 years of service to the light company. Red often joked about moving, but instead resided in Bayard for the next 40 years. Red was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church of Carroll and the Bryan Mercer Post 44 of the American Legion in Bayard. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and could be found supporting them at local school events. Affectionately called the Candy Man', Red always greeted everyone he met with a smile and a peppermint. In later years, he found himself traveling to many soccer games and earned the title soccer grandpa'. Red had a soft spot in his heart for his dogs, loved playing golf with his buddies, enjoyed listening to Southern Gospel music, and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. Red collapsed while mowing his lawn and died suddenly on Monday, August 6, 2015 at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 3 days. Preceding him in death are his parents. Red is survived by his three children Kelly (John) Schweer of Grimes, Shannon (Angie) Moran of Pierre, SD, and Kelsey Moran of Bayard; five grandchildren Corrin and Lauren Schweer and Alexis, Avery, and Leyton Moran; siblings Jerry (Terri) Moran of Ogden, Sandy (Bill) Johnson of Heath, TX and Debbie (Dave) Holts of Ogden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
