Dolores Henning

   Dolores Elizabeth, daughter and only child of Bryce J. and Christine (Willeke) Henning, was born November 17, 1924, at Carroll, Iowa. She attended Carroll schools where she was the editor of the school newspaper. Dolores graduated as the valedictorian from Carroll High School with the Class of 1942. In 1946 she earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Drake University where she was a staffer on The Times Delphic school newspaper. Two years later she was awarded her master’s degree in journalism from the State University of Iowa. While there she worked on The Daily Iowan school paper. Dolores worked as a reporter for The Daily Times Herald in Carroll for a short time before moving to Chicago where she was assistant editor of the Nation’s Schools. In 1957 she began her career with the American Dental Association serving as editor of their trade publication. From 1979 to 1990 Dolores was managing editor of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

   Dolores earned a Phi Beta Kappa key and was a member of Theta Sigma Phi, a women’s honorary journalism fraternity. She traveled extensively abroad including Europe, Africa and Mexico.  Following her retirement in 1990 she continued living in Chicago until 2015, when she moved back to Carroll to be near her family.

   On Thursday evening, February 22, 2018, Dolores died at the Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carroll, Iowa.  She was 93 years, 3 months and 5 days of age. Dolores is preceded in death by her parents and aunt Elizabeth Willeke.  Survivors include her cousin Betty Schmitz of Carroll and Betty’s family.
