Donald Lerssen

March 15, 1935 — January 29, 2013

Donald LeRoy, son of Arthur and Malinda (Erps) Lerssen, was born March 15, 1935 at Manning, Iowa. He grew up in Manning and attended school there. He was a member of the Methodist Church. After completing his education he worked for Max Detlefsen Electric for a short time before enlisting in the United States Marines. Don was stationed in Hawaii. On February 27, 1960 Don was united in marriage with Jeanette Subbert at the Lutheran Church in Carroll. They lived in Carroll for a short time and then in Dedham. He drove truck for his brother in law Maurice Bud' Friedman's Trucking firm. The family then settled in Manning in their current home on the corner of East and Third Streets. Eventually he began trucking for Twin Transfer of Manning. In his spare time Don enjoyed sitting under the tree in his back yard with his many cats. He also spent many enjoyable hours mowing his large yard. Don was blessed with good health most of his life until suffering a blood clot in his leg in January of 2013. After coming home from the hospital he then had a heart attack and was transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where he died on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 14 days. Preceding Don in death are his parents and brother in law Maurice Bud' Friedman. He is survived by his wife Jeanette Lerssen of Manning; two sons Neil Lerssen (Kara) of Ida Grove and Kurt Lerssen of Manning; five grandchildren Paul Lerssen, Tami Jo Elston, Nicki Winchell, Jarred Lerssen and Kennedy Lerssen; four great grandchildren Alexis Lerssen, Riley Lerssen, Kylie Lerssen and Morgan Winchell; two sisters Loretta Friedman of the Manning Plaza and Beverly Grundmeier (David) of Manning; two sisters in law Arlene Kusel (Glen) of Manning and Phyllis Subbert of Glidden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
