Dorothea E. Musfeldt

April 8, 1924 — April 4, 2013

Dorothea Elaine, daughter of Hugo and Adelaide (Weise) Schrum, was born April 8, 1924, at Manning, Carroll County, Iowa. She graduated from Manning High School among the top of her class in 1942. Dorothea became a grade school teacher at a country school in the Manning area. Dorothea was united in marriage to Harry Musfeldt, on September 7, 1944 in Manning. Six children were born to this union. Harry and Dorothea resided on a farm west of Manning and raised their children. Harry died on September 22, 1977. Dorothea remained on the farm until 1989 when she moved into her house on 9th street in Manning. Dorothea loved to travel, visiting places such as China (The Great Wall), Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and all across the United States. While in China her group taught their tour guide to play Pinochle, one of her favorite card games. Dorothea was a dedicated member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. She taught Sunday school, helped with the ladies guild preparing luncheons, and lent a hand wherever she could. Dorothea was the head cook of the congregate meal at the Senior Center for many years. She stayed active being an avid reader, watching birds, listening to Manning sporting events, rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and she bowled into her mid 60's. She loved spending time with her family and was a proud mom, grandma, and great grandma. Dorothea underwent surgery at St. Anthony Hospital in February. She moved to the Manilla Manor in the middle of March for her recovery. Dorothea's health declined and she died on Thursday, April 4, 2013. She was 88 years, 11 months, and 27 days of age. Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Mary Ellen Schleis; brother Roy Schrum; sisters Dolores Schrum, Margaret Thielen; brother-in-law Pete Thielen, Wendell Luetje; and son-in-law Joe McGuire.
