Dorothy E. Masching

June 1, 1930 — January 22, 2014

Dorothy Elizabeth, daughter of John and Clara (Lechtenberg) Sextro, was born June 1, 1930 on the family farm near Manning, Iowa. She grew up on the farm as one of twelve children and attended rural school near her home and then graduated from Manning High School in 1949. She worked as a hired girl and at HR Cleaners in Carroll. On October 6, 1953 Dorothy was united in marriage with Leon J. Masching at Sacred Heart Church in Manning by Reverend J. F. Achatz. Seven children were born to this union. The family farmed near Carroll and Glidden. In 1973 they moved to Carroll where Dorothy was primarily a home maker but also did housekeeping for other families. She also was a substitute in the lunch program at Kuemper School. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and Holy Spirit Ladies Guild. Dorothy was a prayerful member of the Legion of Mary. Volunteering for St. Anthony Auxiliary, New Hope Village Store and rug making kept her busy in her retirement. After the death of her husband in 1983 Dorothy lived in their home for a short time and then moved to an apartment. In her spare time Dorothy enjoyed card playing, fishing, being with her family and especially following her grandchildren's activities. Dorothy was diagnosed with cancer in September of 2013. She died on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at St. Anthony Hospital, Carroll, IA at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 21 days.
