Dorothy Marie Swensen

Dorothy Marie, daughter of Hans and Marie Florence (Christensen) Albretsen, was born July 22, 1927, at Omaha, NE. The family later moved to a farm east of Kimballton, IA where she attended rural school and graduated from Audubon High School in 1945.  Dorothy soon began teaching at rural country schools near and in Elk Horn.  In 1950 she obtained her teaching degree from Omaha University.

On December 29, 1950, Dorothy was united in marriage with Gaylord Swensen at Dallas, TX. The couple resided in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area where Dorothy continued her love of teaching in the Omaha, NE, Council Bluffs, IA and Carter Lake IA, schools until her retirement after 43 years in education.

Dorothy was a confirmed member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton.  She loved to spend time with her family, reading, traveling, and using every opportunity to make new friends.  Dorothy was also generous with her time by volunteering at the library and senior center.

In January of 2007, Dorothys health began to fail and she soon became a resident at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, IA.  She died there on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at the age of 79 years, 11 months, and 5 days.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gaylord Swensen in 1994, brother Harold Albertsen and wife Jo Ann, and two brothers-in-law Levi Swensen and Hans Buckholdt.

She is survived by three sisters: Martha Buckholdt of Hamlin; Margaret and husband Donald Gust of Audubon; and Sharon and husband Dewey Reis of Denison; sister-in-Jeannette Swensen of Harlan; many other relatives, neighbors and friends.
