Edwin Gerhardt, son of William and Elsie (Kettmann) Kalkhoff, was born near Templeton, Iowa on January 31, 1936. He was raised on a farm near Templeton and attended Sacred Heart School, graduating in 1953.

On June 28, 1958 Ed was united in marriage with Catherine Daniel at Holy Angels Church in Roselle. Five children were born to this union. Ed and Kathy lived in Templeton until 1959 when they moved to a farm south of Templeton. Ed farmed his entire working life and did custom combining. Ed and Kathy moved into Manning in 2010, and Ed continued to farm for a few more years.

Ed and Kathy were members at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton and then in Manning when they moved to town. Throughout the years Ed enjoyed golfing, bowling, and woodworking, especially making Christmas gifts for his family and items for the church.

During retirement Ed enjoyed going to coffee, playing cards at the Corner Station, visiting with friends, and taking trips to the casino. He was looking forward to celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary later this year. Ed often told his children, “I just want my kids to be happy.” To this day, that is one of his greatest accomplishments… his children are happy.

After a period of declining health, Ed passed away at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning on Monday, April 9, 2018, surrounded by his family. He reached the age of 82.

Besides his parents Ed is preceded in death by his sister Betty (Earl) Kerkhoff; brothers-in-law: Andrew (Elvera) Daniel and John Eich; and a grandson-in-law Ben Obrecht.

Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathy Kalkhoff of Manning; children: Barb (Jim) Niehaus of Arcadia; Joe (Jackie) Kalkhoff of Manning; Laura (Alan) Fara of Manning; Dan (Margaret) Kalkhoff of Ansley, NE; Pat Vonnahme of Templeton; 16 grandchildren: Sarah (Jeremy) Smith, Robin (Rick) Lawler, Jeffrey Oliver, Jaime (Kayode) Fajingbesi, Jacob (Trista) Kalkhoff, Jordan Kalkhoff, Christin (Casey) Aldridge, Nate (Keely) Fara, Nick (Courtney) Fara, Summer (Steve) Heath, Cody Kalkhoff, Josh (Paige) Kalkhoff, Brandon Kalkhoff, Michelle Vonnahme, Amber (Jake) Schechinger, and Matt Vonnahme; 29 great-grandchildren with 3 more to arrive this summer; sisters-in-law: Arlene (Robert) Wittrock of Mount Carmel and Ann (Robert) Lenz of Carroll; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
