Elizabeth Marie Hann, 90, died Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Blackhawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Iowa. Elizabeth was born on August 14, 1925 at home in Auburn, Iowa to Eugene and Clara (Ellerbrock) Hann.
She attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Lake View High School in 1943. Upon graduation she attended summer school at Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI) and in the fall of 1943, started teaching country school. She taught country schools in Calhoun and Sac Counties and continued her education every summer until she received two teaching certificates. After the country schools were closed, she worked for Safeway Grocery Store in Carroll until she returned home to take care if her elderly parents. After they passed away, she helped her brother, Joe, farm and also worked with livestock. She especially enjoyed working with baby calves. Elizabeth was proud of the fact that she could drive almost all of the farm machinery, even the combine.
Elizabeth loved playing cards, her pets, mowing the yard, gardening and visiting with friends and neighbors when they stopped by. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. She served on the funeral committee and parish council.
Elizabeth is survived by her nephew Henry Schaapveld and his significant other Janice Heittman of West Liberty, Iowa and many cousins and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Joe Hann, sister Theresa and husband Henry “Bud” Schaapveld and a brother in infancy.
