Etta Nadine, daughter of Joe W. and Viva (Goodwin) Johnston, was born at home on the farm in Carroll County, near Coon Rapids, Iowa. She attended country school and then graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1953. She then started working for Garst and Thomas/Pioneer Hybrid Seed Corn Company. On August 23, 1955, Etta was united in marriage with Bryan Emery at Montpelier, Idaho. They made their home in Coon Rapids where they raised their two children. Etta continued to work in the office for Garst and Thomas while raising her children. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Womens Club. Etta was always full of energy. She was a voracious reader, loved to dance and was a loyal Elvis Presley fan. Etta loved a good debate and especially enjoyed being right. She always looked forward to summertime, being outside in the sun and by the water, and to the Christmas season with all of its activities. Above all Etta enjoyed being with her family and friends. In 1983, Etta and Bryan resigned from Garst and Thomas. They moved with Pioneer to Lincoln, Nebraska, and, in 1986, to Johnston, Iowa. While in Johnston, Etta became a member of Saint Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church in Des Moines. When Ettas health began to fail, Bryan retired and cared for her at home until September of 2000 when she became a resident of Perry Lutheran Home in Perry. She died there late Friday, January 20, 2006, at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 17 days. Preceding Etta in death are her parents. She is survived by her husband Bryan Emery of Johnston; daughter Jolene Emery of West Des Moines; son Joe Emery and wife Lori of Dexter; three grandchildren Jacqueline and husband Jarod Matsen of Greenwood Village, CO, Joe Sondgeroth of Ames and B. J. Emery of Iowa City; two sisters Arlene and husband Wade George of Coon Rapids and Bethel and husband Duane Carpenter of Coon Rapids; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
