Evelyn Pauline, daughter of George H. and Pauline D. (Jons) Witt, was born June 22, 1915, on a farm four miles north of Arcadia, Carroll County, Iowa. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and then graduated from Arcadia High School in 1932. She completed Normal Training at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught for three years at Wheatland Township country school. On June 22, 1938, Evelyn was united in marriage with Virtus A. Martens at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Four children were born to this union. Evelyn was a farm wife for 33 years. They first farmed on several farms around Manning and settled on the Martens family farm in 1944. On October 26, 1970, she and Virtus moved into Manning where she worked at the Manning Plaza and Hospital for 15 years before retiring in 1986. Evelyn was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia Where she served as president of Ladies Aid. When thel the famly moved into Manning she transferred her membership to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Her lifes interests included gardening, baking card playing and studying Braille. She also enjoyed organ playing, walking and dancing with Virtus. In addition, Evelyn was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. After the death of her husband in 1991, Evelyn continued to live in their home until 1993 when she became a resident of Bayard Nursing and Rehab Center in Bayard. She died there on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 23 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; grandson Michael Lake; two sisters Violetta and husband Emil Schluter and Berdella and her husband Donald McConnell; four brothers Raymond Witt, George Witt and twins Alvin and Elmer Witt, in infancy; parents-in-law Emil and Ann Martens; three brothers-in-law Clarence Martens and wife Doris, Earl Martens, killed in WW II and Edwin Martens, in infancy; and two sisters-in-law Dorothy and husband Carl Schrum and Irene and husband Eddie Meggers. Evelyn is survived by her children: Neva Martens of Ankeny; Joan and husband Clark Mercer of Austin, TX; Dennis Martens of Bayard Nursing and Rehab Center and Kerry Martens of Austin, TX; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; two sisters-in-law Nell Witt of Manning and Ruthana Witt of Carroll, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
