Fred Timms

February 4, 1925 — August 31, 2017

   Fred James, son of Worth and Caroline (Medinger) Timms, was born February 4, 1925 at David City, Nebraska.  He attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated in 1943 from David City High School, where he was a member of the marching band.  Following graduation he farmed the family farm. He also worked part-time with the Federal Agricultural Soil Conservation Service as a loan inspector for four years.  In 1958 he moved to Denver, Colorado and took supplementary classes at Emily Griffith Opportunity School.  He worked as a chemist at the Denver Grain Exchange. 

   On August 19, 1967 Fred was united in marriage with Grace Scannell at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Denver with Reverend Bernard Degan officiating.  Fred took early retirement at age 59 from the Denver Grain Exchange and worked for Unique Computer Systems.  From 1968 to 1987 he served as manager of the Mile High Housing Association and on the board of directors for the Skyline Volunteer Fire Department in Denver.  In 1987 Fred retired and he and Grace moved to Carroll, Iowa where he worked at Stones Office Supply until August 2003.  He volunteered at the New Hope Bargain Shoppe and was a member of Holy Spirit Church and choir and the Senior Citizen Card Club. He enjoyed gardening, singing, playing cards and bicycling.

   His wife died suddenly on January 28, 2011. Fred continued to live in their apartment until later that year when he moved to assisted living. Shortly thereafter in May of 2012 he moved to St. Anthony Nursing Home, in Carroll, where he died on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 27 days.

   He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Timms; his parents; sisters Margaret Brockevelt and Mary Smith; brothers-in-law Ernie Brockevelt and Willie Smith; sisters-in-law: Helen Schachtner, Lois Heim, Coletta Cook, Sister Mary Agnes Schachter, Shirley Schachtner and Rita Olson; and brothers-in-law: Ronald Schachtner (in infancy), Joseph Schachtner, Virgil Schachtner and Clarence Cook.

   Fred is survived by two children and their spouses Pam and Alan Pickett of Manteno, IL, and Denis and Denise Scannell of Omaha, NE; eleven grandchildren; six great

-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins and sister-in-law, Dorothy Schachtner of Carroll.
