Gary H. Dammann

February 28, 1954 — July 8, 2019

Gary Howard, son of Arlo and Betty Jane (Obman) Dammann, was born February 28, 1954 at Manning, Iowa.  He attended Manning schools and graduated with the class of 1972.  Gary earned an associate degree in Agriculture at Iowa Western Community College.

Gary farmed south of Manning with his dad and brother his entire life.  He also worked to help construct the bean plant near Manning and then worked there. Gary also worked for Orland Fara at Manning Ag Center. He was a hard-worker and took meticulous care of farm equipment and any project he undertook.  He never considered retirement an option.  Gary read newspapers and magazines front-to-back as well as any owner’s manual that crossed his path.  Though he was a private man, Gary cared deeply for his family.  He enjoyed traveling to visit his nieces and sharing his love and knowledge of farming with his nieces, nephews-in-law and great nieces and nephews.  He was also the family’s expert fudge, chocolate chip cookie and grilled cheese cook. Gary's fudge earned a blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair. Gary was a dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Gary fell ill suddenly and was diagnosed with cancer in early June.  He was cared for at Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carroll, IA.  He died there on Monday, July 8, 2019, at the age of 65 years, 4 months and 10 days.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Randy Chalfant.  He is survived by his sister Colleen Chalfant of Guthrie Center and brother Wes Dammann and wife Joyce of Manning; five nieces: Stephanie Ayala and husband Hugo of Brea, California; Sara Blockhus and husband Randy of Altoona; Jacquie Odelson and husband Josh of Western Springs, Illinois; Erin Willis and husband Wes of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Alyssa and husband Nicholas Lemanski of Macomb, Michigan; 7 great-nieces and nephews: Lauren  and Vera Ayala; Ben and Jacob Odelson; Ty and Payton Willis; and Oliver Blockhus; aunt Helen Leiting of Arcadia; other relatives and friends.
