Geneva L. Schreck

September 3, 1927 — April 13, 2012

Geneva LaVonne, daughter of Earl and Grace Ethel (Hobbs) Cretsinger was born on September 3, 1927 in Guthrie County, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1944. Geneva then took a job in the office at Armours Creamery in Coon Rapids.      On June 30, 1950 Geneva was united in marriage with Donald Dean Schreck at her family's farm in Guthrie County. The couple made their home there for a few years while Geneva helped care for her mother. They then moved to Coon Rapids. In 1970, Donald died and Geneva went back to work, opening a preschool in her home, the first in Coon Rapids.  After the preschool became part of the Coon Rapids Schools she began working as a secretary for the schools and later became the school board secretary until her retirement in 1992.      Geneva was a member of the First Christian Church and served as secretary/treasurer. She was an active volunteer with the schools and also congregate meals. Geneva enjoyed crossword puzzles, walking, bird watching, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.      On April 13, 2012 Geneva died peacefully at her home in Coon Rapids, surrounded by her loving family. She was 84 years, 7 months and 10 days of age.      Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Gerald Cretsinger; sisters Arlene and husband Irvin Vetterick; Helen Long and Eleanor and husband Clare Yager; mother and father-in-law Frank and Frances Schreck and brother-in-law Doug Schreck.      She is survived by her children: Steve Schreck and wife Janet of Ankeny and Mary and husband Phil Engelson of Coon Rapids; grandchildren Matthew Schreck and special friend Ang Palmersheim and Spencer Schreck; brother Kenneth Cretsinger and wife Doris of Washington; brother-in-law: Earl Long of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law Millie Schreck of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.   A special heartfelt thank you to Hospice of Iowa, and the exceptional care given by Cindy, Kelsey, Amy and Kim.
