Gerald Haubrich

Mass of the Christian Burial for 88 year old Gerald Haubrich of Carroll will be held Saturday, November 3, at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Church in Carroll, with visitation after 9:00 a.m. at church. The committal service will be at 12:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton. Ohde Twit Funeral Home in Carroll is in charge of arrangements. Gerald John, son of Joseph J. and Mary (Pfieffer) Haubrich was born January 3, 1924 on a farm outside of Dedham in Carroll County, Iowa. He was one of 14 children born to this family. He attended a parochial school near Dedham. On February 5, 1947 Gerald was united in marriage with Maxine Wurr at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids. Three children were born to this union. Gerald and Maxine farmed north of Templeton for 42 years. Gerald was also a talented welder who had his own welding and repair shop called Country Welding. In 1976 Gerald earned the prestigious Goodyear Conservation award in the Carroll County Soil Conservation Program. He was a pioneer in the use of terraces to conserve and prevent soil runoff. Gerald was a lover of tools and always carried a pair of pliers with him. Gerald and Maxine moved to Carroll in 1988. He worked as a grounds keeper for 3 years for the city of Carroll and 7 years for Carroll Community Schools. Gerald was a member of the Carroll Community School Board for 13 years earning the position of vice president and president. Gerald's faith was a big part of his life, attending mass regularly at Holy Spirit. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Over the last year Gerald's health started to decline. Two weeks ago he moved to the Carroll Health Center and was soon placed on hospice. Gerald died there late Monday night, October 29, 2012 at the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 26 days of age. Preceding Gerald in death are his parents; 2 sisters Clara Haubrich and Margaret Tigges; 5 brothers Ambrose, William, Wilfred, Clarence and Joseph Haubrich; 3 brothers-in-law Leonard Tigges, Lawrence Kasperbauer and Wayne Grimm; 3 nephews Alan Haubrich, Richard Kasperbauer and Jeff Haubrich and a niece Eileen Haubrich. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Maxine Haubrich of Carroll; 3 children Greg (Char) Haubrich of Rock Valley; Amy Haubrich of Ralston, NE; Anne Galbraith of La Crosse, WI; 6 grandchildren Nikki (Riley) Auna; Alex Galbraith; Jake McCollum; Abby Haubrich; Jennie Haubrich; Gina (Ryan) Winter; a great-grandchild Brynn Auna; 6 siblings Ron (Charlotte) Haubrich of Carroll; Mary Lou Kasperbauer of Longmont, CO; Marjorie (Lawrence) Schultes of Carroll; Irene Ankenbauer of Carroll; Norma Jean (Ron) Irlbeck of Oxnard, CA; Donna Lee Grimm of Longmont, CO; 5 sisters-in-law Melva Haubrich of Carroll, Shirley Haubrich of Manning, June Anthofer of Granger, Lou Cashatt of Eldora and Sandy Wurr of Coon Rapids; 3 brothers-in-law Dennis Wurr of Coon Rapids, LeVerne Cashett of Eldora, Ambrose Anthofer of Granger; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
