Gladys Musfeldt

April 26, 1928 — May 26, 2016

   Gladys LaVerne, daughter of Julius and Elsie (David) Polzin, was born April 26, 1928 near Aspinwall in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural schools through the sixth grade, the Gray school for seventh through tenth grade and then graduated from Manning High School in 1945. Following graduation Gladys worked at the Manning General Hospital for six years.

   On May 5, 1948, Gladys was united in marriage with George Musfeldt at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. They raised their three children in Manning and on the farm. When they moved to the Howard French farm, she worked at the Irwin Store for 13 years until it closed. Gladys did some babysitting for several years after that. While living in Irwin they transferred their church membership to St. Paul Lutheran located a block from their home.  Gladys cared for George at home until he moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home where he died in December of 2014. She continued to live at their home in Irwin.


   Gladys was a member of her church circle and liked to go fishing. She enjoyed playing Pinochle, cooking & baking, and embroidering. Gladys was famous for her rhubarb pies. Following a short hospital stay, Gladys died at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE, on Thursday, May 26, 2016. She was 88 years and one month of age.

   Gladys is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Earl Polzin and sister Arlene (Howard) French.

   She is survived by three children Sheryl and husband Richard Zinke of Audubon, Carol and husband Orrin Bruhn of Irwin and Richard Musfeldt and wife Jean of Irwin; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Norma Jentzen of Carroll and Melba Musfeldt of Phoenix, AZ; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
