She grew up on farms near Manning ending up on a farm just east of the Hausbarn/Heritage Park. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township near Gray. Grace attended school in Manning and graduated with the Manning High School Class of 1936. Grace then worked at the Virginia Café until July of 1941 when she moved to Willows, CA and began work in a cheese factory. On December 20, 1941, Grace was united in marriage with Eugene Schatz at Carson City, NV. In July of 1942 they moved back to Manning where their children Gene and Jennifer were born. Grace was mostly a stay at home mom, but for seven years she drove bus and worked with physically and mentally handicapped students at Carroll County School for the Trainable and New Hope Village where Grace and Gene were very instrumental from the beginning. She continued to be interested in helping handicapped children throughout her life and volunteered many hours at the New Hope Village Store in Manning. Grace was a member of Zion Lutheran Church after transferring from Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a longtime member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries where she served as president of both. She enjoyed traveling and reading. After the death of her husband in 1999 she moved to an apartment on Center Street where she lived until January of 2013. Then, because of failing health, Grace moved to the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.
