Harold Reinke

November 25, 1918 — August 18, 2013

Harold Henry August, son of Reinhard and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Stumpe) Reinke, was born November 25, 1918 in Manning, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Manning. After completing his education, Harold started working at Harry Diamond's Metal and Scrap Company and also helped Dr. O.W. Wyatt. On January 23, 1941 Harold was united in marriage with Elaine Petersen at the Zion Lutheran Church Parsonage in Manning. In 1943 Harold was drafted into the United States Army where he served six months until his medical discharge later that year. Harold and Elaine and their family eventually made their home in the house on Blaine Street that Harold's grandparents purchased when they came to America. After returning from the service, Harold worked at Priebe and Sons Hatchery for a number of years; drove a bulldozer for Jack Boeck for a short time and with seven other men worked at Swanson's Packing Plant in Omaha. He quit Swanson's in 1947 and worked for Clark Salvage before he started his own salvage business. Harold operated his business for over 50 years, never really retiring. Local folks always knew they could call Harold if they had scrap metal they needed to be rid of. Elaine rode with Harold on many trips to the salvage yard after their family was grown. Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and the American Legion. He loved fishing and his hobbies. Many remember him as a great story teller. He raised all kinds of animals including raccoons, mink and goats. When he could no longer live at home he became a resident of the Manning Plaza. He loved being there, being the center of attention, playing Bingo and participating in Happy Hour. He was an active Plaza resident up until the day he died. His family greatly appreciated the wonderful care he received at the Plaza. Harold died on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the Manning Plaza at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 5 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter in law Ruth Reinke and brother Elmer Reinke. Harold is survived by his wife Elaine Reinke of Manning; nine children: Roger Reinke of Arvada, CO; Mary Segebart (Dale) of Denison; Vergene Wallace (Tom) of Waterloo, NE; Karen Riesselman (Dave) of Lake View; Helen Avitt (Darrel) of Ankeny; Duane Reinke (Judy) of Ankeny; Donna Campbell (Allen) of Pueblo West, CO; Dale "Ernie" Reinke (Karen) of Manning; and Diane Reinke-Kendrick (Greg) of Mitchellville; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
