Harry William Harmeyer

Harry William, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Stevens) Harmeyer, was born September 25, 1916, at Templeton, Iowa. Harry attended school in Templeton and then worked with his family on the farm. From 1943 to 1946 Harry served in the United States Army in the Phillipines and Japan. Following his honorable discharge, he attended barber school and then worked as a barber in Carroll for 40 years. Harry was united in marriage with Lois Egan on March 5, 1946, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll by Rev. Koester. The family made its home in Carroll, and ten children were born to this union. Harry and Lois enjoyed polka dancing together. Harry was a member of Holy Spirit Church and active in the men's club. He was also involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guard and the American Legion. Harry was a member of UCT and an RSVP volunteer. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and watching western movies. After 2006, Harry loyally visited his wife in the nursing home each day. As a result of a fall at his home on Sunday, Harry entered St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll. He died there the following Tuesday morning, December 4, 2012, at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 9 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Lucille Fiala (Tony), Clara Timmerman (Ed), Florence Collison ("Red"), Joe Harmeyer (Frances), and Cecilia Harmeyer in infancy; son-in-law Henderson Gines, Jr.; and great granddaughter Cheyanne Rhodes. Survivors include his wife Lois Harmeyer of Carroll; ten children: Sheila St. Peter (Rick) of Scranton; Jan Gines of Omaha, NE; Gary Harmeyer (Karen) of Virginia Beach, VA; Judy Brandl of Bellevue, NE; Sharon Fisch (Rycke) of West Burlington; Alan Harmeyer (Jackie) of Des Moines; Steven Harmeyer (Kris Conway) of Seattle, WA; Patrick Harmeyer (Dahinda) of Des Moines; Carol Palzewicz (Daniel) of Norwalk; and Christine Harmeyer of Ames; 41 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
