Helen Honold

Helen Ruth, daughter of George and Bernice (Cooney) Keeley, was born September 11, 1916 in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1929 the family moved to a farm near Coon Rapids where she attended Oak Hill rural school, northwest of town. Helen was united in marriage with Fred "Fritz" Honold, on August 14 1938 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Two sons, Jerry and Doug, were born to this union. Fred and Helen took over the Honold family farm after Fred's parents moved to town. The couple farmed with Fred's brother Paul until the 1960's when they started farming on their own. Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church Ladies, OMC, CU TTT's, H&H, Red Hat Club, multiple Bridge clubs and Coffee & Breakfast Ladies. She enjoyed a good party, all kinds of jokes, shopping, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen also enjoyed baking and loved to try new recipes; her Angel Food Pie was a must at family gatherings. After their retirement from farming, Fred and Helen were able to spend 17 winters in Texas. Fred passed away on February 19, 1996 and Helen was able to remain on the farm until 2005, when she moved into Coon Rapids. She moved to Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in October of 2013 and died there on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 23 days. She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Fred Honold, her parents, and a sister. Helen is survived by her sons, Jerry and his wife Beverly Honold and Douglas and his wife Linda Honold, all of Coon Rapids; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
