JoAnn, daughter of Kenneth and Virginia (Brown) Dethlefs, was born February 1, 1952 at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. She grew up in Manning and graduated from Manning High School in 1970. She then attended and graduated from the University of Iowa, majoring in Elementary Education, and received a library science certification from Buena Vista University. She was the junior and senior high librarian at Glidden-Ralston schools for four years.

On June 23, 1979 JoAnn was united in marriage with Jim Karsten at the United Methodist Church in Manning. JoAnn worked at Manning Trust and Savings/American Interstate Bank for 17 years before joining Brink and Sextro Law Firm, from which she retired in 2018.

JoAnn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Manning, where she was in the bell choir, active as organist since high school, and a Sunday school teacher for 24 years. Throughout the years, JoAnn was a member of PEO, and enjoyed playing piano, sitting on the deck, bird watching and going on walks. She was also a movie buff, and a avid reader of books. JoAnn cherished the time spent traveling to Arizona to visit family and spending time with her nieces and nephews and their families.

On Monday, July 13, 2020 JoAnn passed away at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, following a courageous 2-year battle with breast cancer. She was 68 years, 5 months and 12 days of age.

JoAnn is survived by her husband Jim Karsten of Manning; sister Georgia (Rick) Lohrmann of Manning; Jim’s siblings: Jeff (Rita) Karsten of Chandler, Arizona; Jan (Dan) Lorenzen of Manning; Joni (Doug) Summers of Gilbert, Arizona; Mike Rasmussen of Manilla; Joe (Becky) Karsten of Manning; Jason Karsten of Mesa, Arizona; and by numerous beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; Jim’s parents Wilbur and Marlys Karsten; and a sister-in-law Julie Rasmussen.
