Joseph Francis, son of Joseph Martin and Kathryn (Blum) Schiltz, was born November 8, 1922 on a farm near Panama, Iowa. He lived with his family near Panama until the middle of his junior year in high school when they moved to Defiance. Joe graduated from Defiance High School in 1941 and then started farming with his father who had purchased a farm near Manilla. While working near Manilla Joe met Irene Neuhafel who he married on June 4, 1946 at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. They started farming south of Manilla until the spring of 1947 when they moved to a farm west of Manilla. Four years later they moved south of Guthrie Center. In 1960 Joe and his family moved back north of Manilla. In 1964, Joe started working for Farmland Foods in Denison after a farm sale. After 19 years with Farmland Foods he retired and Joe and Irene continued to live in Manilla. His wife Irene died in December of 1990. In June of 1994 Joe was united in marriage with Helen Tiefentaler. Sadly she died in September of that year. On December 7, 1996 Joe was united in marriage with Arlene K. Wittrock. The couple made their home in Manilla. Joe was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus. Joe always had a good horse and was a long time member of the Manilla Rough Riders Saddle Club and loved participating in parades and trail rides. He and Arlene also enjoyed being a part of the Polka Club.
