Joyce Ortbals

Joyce Marie, daughter of Elmer Frizzel and Cliffor Nelson, was born July 19, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. Joyce was lovingly raised by Andrew and Cliffor Sabby. She graduated from Austin High School in Chicago in 1947. Joyce was a secretary throughout her career while living in Chicago. On July 17, 1948, Joyce was united in marriage with Richard Ortbals at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Fullerton Avenue in Chicago. She and Richard lived in Chicago for about 45 years until moving to Overland Park, Kansas. She continued working as a secretary until her retirement at the age of 55. In February of 2014, they moved to Coon Rapids, Iowa to live in Park View Assisted Living. Six months later Joyce joined the Thomas Rest Haven family. On Saturday, May 9, 2015, Joyce died there at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 20 days. Joyce was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago and the Welcome Wagon. She loved to bowl and was in a league for many years. Joyce enjoyed reading, shopping, going on picnics, visiting the zoo, and boating on Fox Lake. Preceding her in death are her parents; sisters Dorothy Koleno and Inez Wilke; and two daughters Valerie Jo Ortbals and Melanie Fraze. Joyce is survived by her husband Richard Ortbals of Coon Rapids, IA; children Cindy (Craig) Murray of Audubon, IA, Jim Ortbals of Charlotte NC, Ken (Barb) Ortbal of Mercersburg, PA, Melissa Greenlee of Leesburg, VA; a grandson Kenneth (Katie) Fraze of Overland Park, KS raised by Joyce and Richard; 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and other family and friends.
