Judy Sue Lingle was born a twin on August 2, 1943, the daughter of Henry Claus and Florence Mabel (Schroeder) Thomssen in Carroll, Iowa. She was baptized on October 24, 1943, and later confirmed her faith on May 28, 1961, both at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, where she remained a lifelong member. Judy was raised on country farms and developed a strong work ethic from an early age. She attended a rural country school through the eighth grade and graduated with the Manning High School Class of 1961.
On July 23, 1961, Judy was united in marriage to LeRoy Lingle at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Together, they made their home near Manilla in Walkertown and were blessed with seven children. A devoted and traditional farm wife. She was known for always having warm meals ready, a comfortable home and an abundance of love for her family. She delivered meals to the fields, hauled corn to town and plucked countless ducks and chickens over the years.
Judy worked for over 20 years at the Manilla Manor, where she led activities for the residents, who especially looked forward to her homemade pickles. In addition to her deep involvement at Trinity Lutheran Church and the Priscilla Guild, Judy taught confirmation classes for several years. She was also a longtime 4-H leader of the Sunshine Sister’s club and enjoyed attending various county and state fairs.
Judy had a true love for all living creatures and a green thumb for gardening. She took pride in growing large quantities of vegetables and was known for selling them by the pound. She loved preserving her harvest, especially pickled beets, lime pickles, and tomatoes. For many years, Judy was known for making many cakes for the community, creating beautiful cakes for all kinds of special occasions. Above all, Judy was a friend to everyone she met and treasured the time spent making memories with her beloved family.
Judy passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 81 years, 11 months and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, LeRoy Lingle; siblings: Darlyne (Edward) Dahleen, Larry (Rose Ann) Thomssen and Jean (James) Christensen.
She is survived by her seven children: Cynthia (Daniel) Fastje of Denison; Steven (Wende Meyer) Lingle of Manilla; Susan (Rodney) Weltz of Denison; Scott (Kristine) Lingle of Manilla; Sylvia Brinker (Mark Mikkelsen) of Carroll; Curtis Lingle (Sherri Lingle) of Manilla; Brian (Penny) Lingle of Manilla; 17 grandchildren: Nicholas (Kaitlyn) Fastje, Nathan Fastje, Jacob Weltz (Emma Cotton), Michael (Alyssa) Weltz, Matthew Weltz, Jessica Lingle (Craig Acton), Cole (Kaitlyn) Facile-Lingle, Miranda Lingle (Luke Wingert), Kyler Brinker, Kody Brinker, Kara Brinker, Leanne (Drew) Hinners, Sara (Austin) Dahlgren, Alexander Lingle (Megan Campo), Benjamin Lingle (Ellie Magnuson), Samantha (Dominik) Elder and Madison (Cody) Obmann; 14 great-grandchildren; special friend, Keith Boyens; and many other family members and friends.
Visitation with family greeting friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025, also at Trinity Lutheran Church. Her burial will follow in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. Memorials may be directed to the family for a donation to be made in her name.
