Karma Overgaard Sorensen, daughter of Niels and Nadjeschda (Lynge) Overgaard, was born on June 6, 1936, in Kimballton, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Kimballton Lutheran Church. Karma attended school in Kimballton and graduated from Elk Horn High School with the Class of 1955.
On January 29, 1956, Karma was united in marriage to Howard Nels Sorensen in Kimballton. The couple made their home in Elk Horn, where they raised their family and built a life grounded in faith, community, and service.
Karma began her career as a postal clerk at the Elk Horn Post Office. In 1982, she was appointed Postmaster and proudly served a total of 20 years with the United States Postal Service. Both Karma and Howard were active members of Elk Horn Lutheran Church and participated in numerous civic organizations throughout the community. In 1996, they were honored as the Tivoli King and Queen.
Karma enjoyed many hobbies and interests throughout her life. She especially loved flower gardening, with hostas holding a special place in her heart. An avid quilter, she enjoyed attending quilting retreats and generously shared her talents by making quilts for veterans, including many residents of Salem Lutheran Home. She also enjoyed spending time with her Bunco group and playing Rummikub with friends and family. Dedicated to her community, Karma served on numerous local committees and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Karma passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at her home in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 29 days.
In addition to her parents, Niels and Nadjeschda Overgaard, Karma was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Sorensen, in November 2025; great-grandson, Camden Van Ert; sisters, Annette Andersen, Ardis Petersen, Elsa West, and Eva Leistad; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Lillian Eggerss.
Karma is survived by her children: Marcia (Bruce) Roenfeld of Panora, Diane (Richard) Larson of Atlantic, Janell (Wayne) Hansen of Elk Horn, Thomas (Karen) Sorensen of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Stacie (Ryan) Larsen of Elk Horn; Larry Nguyen and family of Grandview; 14 grandchildren: Lindsey (Brad) Devore, Andrea Bruns (Mike Nicodemus), Michelle (Brent) DePhillips, Tyler (Marie) Larson, Chelsie (Gary) Van Ert, Aaron Hansen, Kristin (Nick) Olsen, Jared Hansen, Amber (Justin) Walter, Beau Sorensen, Abigail (Bryce) Puck, Kaitlynn Sorensen, Cooper Larsen, and Davis Larsen; 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Egon Overgaard of Longville, Minnesota; her sister, Ebba Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; along with extended family members and many friends.
Visitation with family greeting friends will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Elk Horn Lutheran Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m., also at the church. A private family burial will be held at Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Elk Horn Lutheran Church in Karma's memory.
