Katherine Garnes

Katherine Jane, daughter of George and Anna (Dumas) Dimitroff, was born March 12, 1929 on a farm east of Dedham, Iowa. She attended kindergarten and first grade at St. Joseph School in Dedham. The family moved to a farm south of Old Carrollton northwest of Coon Rapids where she nearly completed eighth grade before the family again moved to a farm north of Evergreen School where she completed eighth, ninth and tenth grade. Katherine graduated from Viola Center High School in 1947 after they moved to a farm near there. After completing her education, Katherine worked in a couple of cafes in Coon Rapids. On March 27, 1948 Katherine was united in marriage with Lester Garnes. Two children were born to this union. In 1967 Les started his own electrical shop where Katherine kept the books for his business. Katherine was a busy homemaker and mother. In her spare time and retirement she enjoyed trips to Prairie Meadows, going to garage sales, and reading. She volunteered at the New Hope Village Store in Coon Rapids and Carroll. Over the years her cats give her much enjoyment and companionship. After the death of her husband on February 26, 2008 Katherine remained in their home. She enjoyed good health throughout her life until she was diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 2015. She was in the hospital for a week and Thomas Rest Haven in for about two weeks before her death there early Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 27 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; in laws; and sisters Rosemary Reese, Christina Erickson and Margaret Dimitroff. Katherine is survived by her children Larry (Sharon) Moreland of Provo, UT, Nancy (Bruce) Glascock of Caldwell, ID and Terry (Vick) Garnes of Coon Rapids; granddaughters Lauren and Johanna Garnes of Coon Rapids; brother George (Mabel) Dimitroff of Milan, IL; sister in law Lula Garnes of Bayard; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
