Larry Archer, son of Lanaous and Virginia Ellen (Downs) Childress, was born October 10, 1941 at Humboldt, Tennessee. He started school in Humboldt and at the age of 13 moved with his family to Chicago. Larry continued his schooling at Waller High School in Chicago. He received his certificate of completion in 1967. Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960. He served as an airplane mechanic on KB50J, an aircraft refueler of F100 fighter jets. After his honorable discharge in 1964 he was in the reserves for two years while living in Chicago. Larry traveled with his mom and step-dad to Missouri where they purchased property for retirement. Larry purchased property next door and moved there also. He worked at Silver Dollar City in maintenance. Larry then worked as a clerk in area motels. He will be affectionately remembered as lovable, outspoken and ornery. When Larry experienced health problems he moved to Elk Horn to live with his sister Patsy Gorka in December of 2007. He experienced a stroke and became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn a few weeks before his death there on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Larry was 70 years, 6 months and 3 weeks of age. Preceding Larry in death are his parents and brother Bobby Lee Childress. He is survived by his sister Patsy Gorka of Elk Horn, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
