Lavern Hoffman

LaVern Joseph, son of John F. and Linda Mae (Thelen), Hoffmann, was born July 16, 1948 in Carroll, Iowa. He attended St. Ann School in Vail for two years and then Grant #5 for 15 years. After that he went to the Glenwood State School until 1977 when he became one of the first residents of New Hope Village in Carroll. LaVern was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll. He was always a busy man, enjoying playing dice, cards, music, singing and puzzles. Artwork, watching Western Movies, especially John Wayne movies, and eating Three Musketeers candy bars were a pleasure for him. He was interested in cars, the Special Olympics and Challenge Days. Above all he loved being with his family. LaVern's health had been failing and he died on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at St. Anthony Hospital at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 28 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers Cletus, in infancy, Delbert and John Hoffmann; sister LaVeda Segebart; nephew Joshua Hoffmann; grandparents Sylvester and Mathilda (Neuerberg) Thelen and John F. and Magdalena (Sondgeroth) Hoffmann. LaVern is survived by his siblings: Melvin Hoffmann of Dundalk, MD; Rosemary (Earl) Possehn of Fort Dodge; Loras (Marlene) Hoffmann of Arcadia; Daryl Hoffmann of Carroll; Lawrence (Char) Hoffmann of Glidden; Geralyn Shirbroun and fiancé Darwin Halterman of Bayard; and Brenda (Jackie) Cain of Greenville, KY; brother in law Ernest Segebart of Denison; sister in law Donna Hoffmann of Carroll; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
