La Von G., daughter of George Henry and Mary Etta (Raygor) Johnston, was born October 4, 1919, at home on the farm north of Coon Rapids, Iowa.  She attended country school and Coon Rapids High School.     On July 14, 1941, La Von was united in marriage with Howard Smouse at Maryville, Missouri.  The couple made their home on a farm near Coon Rapids until 1946 when they moved in to town.  Three children were born to this union.  Through the years La Von always cared for her family in addition to working outside the home.  When Howard died in 1970, La Von continued to live in their home in Coon Rapids.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids.    La Von was a hard-working and loving woman who never knew a stranger.  In fact, the whole community knew her as “Granny.”  She loved to play games and go fishing with her family and friends and was known for her homemade pies and noodles. Through the years La Von kept an extensive garden and preserved a lot of food.   Due to her declining health, La Von moved to Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids in November in 2014.  She died there on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 15 days.    La Von is preceded in death by her parents; husband Howard Smouse; son Steve Smouse; daughter Juanita Paulsen; great grandson Donald Sterns; great great grandson Drew Becker; and her sisters and brothers and their spouses.    She is survived by her daughter Janet Cretsinger (Norm) of Coon Rapids; son-in-law Lyle Paulsen of Coon Rapids; 10 grandchildren: Larry Paulsen of Coon Rapids; Deb Becker (Brad) of Emmetsburg; Gloria Risius (Joe) of Ankeny; Michelle Sterns of W.
