Leila Mae Nelsen

Leila Mae, daughter of Jens P. Andersen and Hilda (Hansen) Andersen, was born November 17, 1929 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She grew up in Council Bluffs until 1941 when her family moved to Elk Horn. Leila Mae graduated from Elk Horn High School in 1948. Later that year, on December 12, 1948, she was united in marriage with Lloyd D. Nelsen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton. They were parents of two sons and made their home on the farm north of Kimballton. Leila Mae was primarily a homemaker but also helped her husband with the farming and worked at Salem Lutheran Home when her sons were growing up. Later on she worked at the Egg Krate at the Elk Horn Mall where she had her own booth featuring antique and collectible glassware. Leila Mae always planted a large garden and enjoyed raising flowers in her yard. She thoroughly enjoyed going to auctions. Leila Mae was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton and served on the church council. She was also a member of the Kimballton Heritage Society. Leila Mae and Lloyd moved into Kimballton in 1991. When her health began to fail she became a resident of Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn in March of 2012. She passed away there on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 29 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; two brothers Clifford Andersen and Dale Andersen and sister June Poldberg. Leila Mae is survived by her husband of 65 years Lloyd Nelsen of Kimballton; two sons Mark D. Nelsen (Donna) of Harlan and John A. Nelsen (Therese M.) of Kimballton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; sister Millie Eskov of Elk Horn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
