Lena Velma, daughter of Frank and Emma (Trucks) Conner, was born June 25, 1905, the youngest of six children on the family farm near Carrollton, Iowa. She attended school in Carrollton through the eighth grade and then graduated as valedictorian from Coon Rapids High School in 1923. Velma attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one year and returned to Coon Rapids to teach at Heald country school for two years.    In May of 1925, Velma was united in marriage with John Ernest Lloyd at Glidden. They were the parents of two sons and lived on several farms in the area. Eventually they returned to the Conner farm where Velma had been born and raised, living there for 40 years.    Velma enjoyed memberships in many community groups through the years. Originally, she was a member of the Ladies Aid of the United Brethren Church in Carrollton until it closed its doors in 1948. Her energy then turned to working on projects as a member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. She also was a member of the United Methodist Women, Carrollton Community Club, her beloved Birthday Club and was a charter member of EO Chapter of T.T.T. and the Carrollton Community Heritage Club. Besides socializing and entertaining in her many groups, she found time for clubs, gardening, creating beautiful handiwork and always a cup of coffee with friends. Her lifelong love of music was obvious, as she knew the words to all the old favorite songs and hymns. Velma proudly followed the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They in turn enjoyed Grandma Velmas excellent cooking and traditional family dinners. They knew they would always find cookies in the cookie jar and a big hug waiting for them.    After her husbands death in 1971, Velma remained on their Century Farm until 1986 when she moved into an apartment in Coon Rapids. In 1996, Velma became a resident of Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids where she died on Sunday, September 10, 2006, at the age of 101 years, 2 months and 15 days. Velma was privileged to experience a century of history, friendship and family.    Preceding Velma in death are her parents; husband; son Jack Lloyd and wife Sandy; brother Abe Conner and wife Charlotte; four sisters: Mamie and husband George Smith; Elsie and husband Roy Anderson; Bessie and husband Dutch Bell; and one sister in infancy.    She is survived by her son Dean Lloyd and wife Evelyn of Coon Rapids; five grandchildren: Janet and husband Bob Mahan of Ames; Jinger and husband Rick Moore of Ingleside, IL; Scott Lloyd and wife Melanie of St. Louis, MO; Polly and husband Tom Polzella of Fishkill, NY; and John Lloyd and wife Linda of Goldfield; 12 great-grandchildren: Lindsay and husband Casey Radmann; Melissa and husband Todd Kranz; Allison and Ashley Mahan; Ryan Karp; Lauren Karp; Katie Karp; Emily and Tom Lloyd; Amber Martin; and Alysha and Shanese Lloyd; two great-great-grandsons Anthony and Nicholas; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Ruby Gruber and Lynn, Evor, Verda and Darlene Lloyd; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
