Lonnie Frank Ferneding, son of Alvin J. and Rita E. (Dentlinger) Ferneding, was born on March 13, 1947, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He was baptized, received his First Holy Communion, and later was confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton.
Lonnie grew up on a farm outside of Templeton. He attended elementary school at Sacred Heart in Templeton and graduated from Kuemper High School with the Class of 1965. He joined the Army National Guard and served from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1972.
On May 8, 1971, Lonnie was united in marriage with Betty Sibbel at Holy Angels Church in Roselle. Three children were born to this union.
Lonnie and Betty farmed southwest of Manning and were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning. Lonnie was also a member of the Dedham American Legion and the Knights of Columbus in Templeton. He served on the Aspinwall Cooperative Board from 1989 to 1998 and was one of the organizers of the Old Iron Club’s annual Manning tractor ride.
Lonnie and Betty moved to town in 2014 and Lonnie continued to farm with their boys. In his free time, he enjoyed tractor rides, card games with friends, and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Lonnie passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 2, 2026 having attained the age of 78 years, ten months and 20 days. Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jim Ferneding, Mike Ferneding and Mark Ferneding and his nephew, Lance McNaught.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Ferneding of Manning; children: Gary (Sara) Ferneding of Manning; Tim Ferneding of Manning; Beth Ann Bandow (Brandon Snyder) of Carroll; nine grandchildren: Taylor Ferneding, Brady Ferneding, Addisyn Bandow, Katelyn Bandow, Jayce Ferneding, Landon Ferneding, Kayden Ferneding, Morgan Ferneding and Brooks Snyder; siblings: Gene (Mary) Ferneding of Carroll; Mary Kay (Steve) Schroeder of Kingsley; Jane Ferneding (Tom Timperley) of Blair, NE; Joni (Mike) Warner of Manning; sisters-in-law: Joyce Ferneding of Manning and Jean Ferneding of Manning; nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
