Lorna Mae Palmer

April 14, 1921 — August 27, 2013

Lorna Mae, daughter of Obe E. and Mary E. (Van Cleave) Allen, was born April 14, 1921 south of Jamaica, Iowa. She started school in Jamaica, later attending Maple Grove No. 9 in Dallas County and Greenbrier No 9 in Greene County. She then graduated from Bayard High School in 1939. After completing her education, Lorna worked for various families in the area. On August 16, 1941 Lorna was united in marriage with Delbert "Hap" Palmer. They worked for area farmers before Hap was drafted into the United States Army. After his honorable discharge, they continued to farm for others until purchasing their own farm in 1954 south of Coon Rapids. After 41 years on the farm they moved into Coon Rapids in August of 1995. Lorna was a member of the Needle Club in Orange Township, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a homemaker and helpmate on the farm. When her children participated in sports and other school activities she joyfully supported them. In her spare time she quilted, sewed, gardened and tended to her flowers. Lorna remained independent after the death of her husband in 2000. When her health began to fail in the spring of 2013, she moved to Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids where she died on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at the age of 92 years, 4 months and 13 days.
